Since last few days we are hearing a lot about
corruption from CAG, media and from IAC, which are making news for exposing
many scams and politicians for their roles in these scams like Coal Gate, 2G
scam, mining scams and Commonwealth Games scam. Media and IAC also exposed the
nexus between the government and business houses for illegal business practises and for bending
the government policies to grant them some undue benefits. Any type of corruption is not only a moral failure for the government but corruption
indicates government's failure on keeping check on the business activity of wrong
doers who are eventually some powerful politicians or the relatives of them. And
it can be reason of a big embarrassment for the government if its own ministers
are found involved in some kind of corruption. Governments have already faced many
situations where Some of ministers who were in-charge of deciding some kind of
policy which will be the fate for 1.2 billion peoples, were actually acting as middlemen
for some personal gain.
But all this stuff which is in the picture is only a
single side of coin which indicates that many powerful personalities from
political and business class are involved in corrupt practices of denying the fundamental
rights to a large section of our population or grabbing medium of the livelihood
form the common public on the name of development of the country for the fulfilment
of their own greed. Other side of coin indicates the corrupt practises of
common public. Today, the corruption has become a part of our life by our
own mistakes for which we have to blame our-self. In other words, if political
and business class are accused of institutionalizing the corruption then common
public is accused of socializing the corruption.
The root cause of social corruption is the
same as it is in the political or in business class which is "greed"
or desire for some undue benefits. For example if a person pays bribe to get a
government job then it is the first step toward institutionalizing corruption
which lays the foundation for corrupt behaviour throughout his service in that
department (in most of cases). This
single act can have many adverse effects on our society like
·
The person who got the job has grabbed
the right of a deserving candidate which can eventually causes frustration in
those deserving candidates and forces them to search the alternative like
bribing for the job.
·
The person who is not deserving the job
and got it by paying the bribe can endorse the corrupt behaviour throughout his
service.
·
Non deserving candidates also compromises
with the quality of service which could be better if a deserving candidate had
got that job.
Another reason of social corruption is lake of
knowledge about the rights. Sometimes we pay bribe as a general practice like
tradition which is followed by most of others. This type of practice indicates
that the corruption has a strong roots in our society and we don't raise our
voices or if some of us does so, we laugh at him and advice him not to mess
with powerful netas or babus.
At the time of elections, we elect the candidates
not by his merit or his vision for the future, "most of times we not even
know about anything about their vision" and just vote them because of his
cast, religion or his surname or because his father was some powerful person.
This is again very dangerous for our country which not only spoils the future
of many bright youngsters but can make some changes the legislation for some
type of personal gains or due to the lake of adequate knowledge of the matter, which can adversely affect us.
One thing is very clear from the history that
change always starts from the general public not from the ruling or elite class.
So, this time also it has to come from the same place as it used to be and the
process has already started. Together, we are the power that can change not
only our fate but also the fate coming generations. Around 75% of our population is literate and average
age of Indian citizen is about 25 years, which shows that we can make any
impossible thing to happen together. Change in the attitude of society is infectious,
if some of us take the stand then it will lead the nation towards a brighter tomorrow.
We have to put aside our personal gains which we can get by corrupt practices,
we have to elect our candidates only on the basis of their merits and their
vision for the tomorrow, we have to know our rights properly and stop paying
the bribe for our rights.
